How to get the most out of your photo session

As a Photographer I have had many years of experience photographing countless couples and solo sessions. Every single person I have photographed were excited to capture their new season of life, accomplishment or taking the next steps towards marriage! Once you have discovered which photographer matches your vision and vibe, this is when you can start planning your session! Your photos will be a memento to share and have forever, you want to make sure you have everything worked out beforehand to make sure you have a stress free session! Below is a small guide on how to get the most out of your photo session.

Prep beforehand

First and foremost, one of the most important things that you can do in preparation for your photo session is prep! Prep can look like a lot of different things. In this case, prepping for your photos can look like:

  • Picking out a location and time

  • Pre scheduling hair and makeup

  • Picking out your outfits well in advance! I recommend bringing two outfit options. One being more dressy/classy and the other being a bit more casual

  • Scheduling a nail appointment

  • Bringing an emergency kit filled with extra bobby pins, bandaids, a hair brush, deodorant and anything else you may need!

  • Practice posing in front of the mirror if you’re a bit more camera shy.

Your engagement, graduation, or headshot photos are a once-in-a-lifetime moment! Make sure that you are doing everything that you can possible to prep beforehand. The days leading up to your session should be exciting, not stressful!

Gather posing/photo inspiration

A great way to come prepared is gathering photo inspo beforehand (Pinterest is such a great way to find tons of inspiration!) It not only can help you in gathering your thoughts and creating a cohesive theme, but it also helps me in capturing the type of images that you enjoy as well.

Choose multiple locations for your session

A great way to add a little bit more creativity for your session is to try different photo locations. Having a beautiful backdrop makes all the difference when it comes to getting your photos done. That being said, a perfect way to add a little bit more Wow factor to your backdrop is by choosing multiple different locations. Do these have to be the most extravagant, out-of-the-box photo locations you’ve ever seen? Absolutely not! When it comes to choosing your photo locations, the choice is up to you. If you’re struggling to find the perfect backdrop for your photos, here are a few tips to help you choose!

  • Making sure to pick the right season that fits you. Even if you’re graduating school in the spring I have had many grads choose to take their photos in the summer or winter because it was more of their vibe! This is important when establishing what your photos are going to look like!

  • Choose a location that is meaningful to you! Choosing a spot that has a lot of memories and history will make it more special to look back on them in the future.

  • When picking your location visit it during the morning and afternoon and see how the lighting is. Some locations have more light at different times of the day. Lighting has a huge factor when choosing your location!

  • Choose a location that is meaningful to you! Choosing a spot that has a lot of memories and history will make it more special to look back on them in the future.

  • Pick a location that will match the vibe of your style and outfits. The last thing you want is the blend in with the backdrop. You are the center of all of your images, so be aware of that when choosing the perfect photo location!
