How to make your headshot more fun and personal!

The importance of a Modern day Headshot

Let’s talk about headshots! Headshots through the years have gotten the wrap of being stuffy and boring. For me I like to think of a “headshot” session as a mini photo session. The modern take on headshots is not only about showing your face but also letting your personality shine. This is the time to let your audience know the real you and why they should hire you or invest in your business!

If I don’t want a boring headshot, I certainly don’t want my clients having one! This has been my mission for a long time now to create headshots that a more than just a plain backdrop and looking straight into the camera smiling.

When creating a thoughtful and planned out image you want to keep personality, vibe, and movement within your posing in mind.

Personality

A huge part of what makes and image YOU is your personality shining through.

For me I like to take an approach of making my client feel comfortable in front of the camera. Get some of their favorite music blasting, have some reference images that reflect their vision to help with posing. Be their hype women and compliment them! That always gets genuine smiles and laughs.

Vibe

When taking your headshots it’s smart to think about who is the audience you are attracting! Bring your personality into your session. Make it fun and interesting and unique to the story you want to tell about YOU!

I always tell my clients to bring props to your sessions, add fun colors and pieces to your wardrobe or choose a colorful backdrop that allows yourself to pop in your photos! Wardrobe is such an important aspect that allows yourself to shine.

This is the backdrop that Taylor chose for her headshots, and she is STUNNING! She chose the orange because she wanted something a bit more moody to set herself from the backdrop and coordinate a color that compliments the colors of her outfit.

Movement

Yes you can use your WHOLE body!

Traditional headshots tend to focus on the face and shoulders. The modern headshot allows you to add your own twist to it! Instead of just smiling into the camera, add some movement to your photos!

  • Walk or step away from the camera

  • Sit on a chair

  • Try different angles with your shoulders, chin and the tilt of your head.

  • Have a jacket or hat as a prop

  • Shake your head around and play with your hair

  • Sit on the ground with your legs posed to the side and lean over them

Remember headshots are supposed to be fun! Put on that fun outfit, bring the props and let your personality shine!
