What I have learned over the past 4 years going full time with my photography business!

Tomorrow marks 4 years of taking the leap and diving full time into my photography business! It’s crazy to think in 2020 we were in the middle of a pandemic and I decided to just do the dang thing! Life has been so great and I cannot wait for what for this next year and season of life brings!

With each year comes new challenges, new successes, new friends, new lessons - you get the gist. As I look back, there are so many things that I have learned in the past 4 years. Some good and some bad. Yet with each passing year, I find myself so grateful for the years prior. I wanted to take today’s post to share some of the things I’ve learned over the past couple of years. This really is a little letter for myself but take what you need and apply as you see fit to your life or business!

1o things I have learned over the past 4 years going full time with mu business:

  1. Do it scared. Nothing great comes from within comfort zones. Get out and do something scary because usually, nine times out of ten, it’s worth it.

  2. Take time for yourself. You can’t fill other peoples cups if yours is empty.

  3. Say yes to things that make you happy and no to things that drain you.

  4. Don’t be afraid to ask for help. So many times I have reached out to fellow photographers for a question about editing or photoshop and in the end I always come out learning something new.

  5. Good things take time. Don’t judge where you are in your business compared to someone who has been doing it for 20+ years.

  6. Set boundaries. The first few years in I was working 24/7 and answering texts and calls at all hours of the day. Setting actual business hours for myself allowed me to take a step back and enjoy my days off and evenings being present.

  7. Never stop learning. Every year I find something new to work on or a photo technique I want to get better at. This has allowed me to grow so much within my business and life.

  8. It’s ok to be in a creative rut. I used get down on myself when I wouldn’t want to take photos or would feel uninspired. I realized everyone has these moments! Some days you are not going to want to go to work, and thats ok!

  9. Social media is NOT everything. Don’t base your work or self worth on likes or how many followers you have!

  10. Lastly, have fun. Always remember where you came from and why you started! I will always be that little girl who loved art and capturing memories.

Cheers to another creative year ahead and getting to work with and meet so many wonderful people along the way!
